Caught the late showing of the new Woody Allen movie last night. Sure this is his third movie with Scarlett Johansson but this is not her movie. The real stars are Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz (who plays crazy very well). The movie started off pretty slow. It didn’t seem to be heading anywhere until Cruz’s character comes into the picture. Her’s and Bardem performances, along with plenty of beautifully Spanish scenery, turned this into a really enjoyable picture for me.

We rented In Bruges on Friday night. It was a fun British gangster movie. Now we have some more sights for our list of stuff to see in Bruges when we are there next week.

Like Matchpoint, its a thriller set in London. Its good but not as good as Matchpoint, which I would say is his best movie since Mighty Aphrodite. There is something about Allen’s skill as a writer or director that lets him craft great suspense. If only he could have found a role for Scarlett Johansson in this movie. According to Wikipedia, his next movie is set in Barcelona and includes Scarlett and Penelope Cruz, good tastes.

We caught an early show of the new Coen brother’s film last night. It was very good, definitely their best work in years. You could almost call it a Fargo set in West Texas, but this version is grimmer and much more of a thriller/chase movie than Fargo.

Afterwards we tried to get a table at Elemental. Just a warning to those readers trying to search out this restaurant: it has no street access or sign. Its on the ground floor of a new-ish condo building across from Gasworks park, up some steps on the eastside. There is really no other businesses around there open at night so if there is a light on that should be the place. (Or someone’s ground floor condo.) As with most new small hip restaurants they do not take reservations, but they also did not hire a host. We showed up at 7:30 and were greeted with an unfriendly sign saying: “Sorry but we are full and can not help you right now. Usually tables are available after 8:30.” With no place to wait for an hour we took about appetites to Pair instead where the friendly host quickly found a seat for us at the bar. Maybe we will try for Elemental again on a slower week night.

When it comes to SIFF films we always have our best luck with the Scandinavians. We enjoyed Jonny Vang a few years ago at SIFF and when we saw the director had another film this year we put it on our list. Unfortunately, The Bothersome Man was no where near as good. Somewhere in between seeing the main character chop his own finger off or getting hit and dragged by a train four times there was a comedy in there. Something to do with Ikea I think.

Being from the Midwest, hearing the truckers point of view was not all the new or surprising. But all the shots of American roadsides made the movie worth it.

The Arts section of today’s Sunday Times was very Sci-Fi themed. First with a piece on Philip K. Dick’s new Library of America volume (edited by Jonathan Lethem).

The books aren’t just trippy, though. The best of them are visionary or surreal in a way that American literature, so rooted in reality and observation, seldom is. Critics have often compared Mr. Dick to Borges, Kafka, Calvino. To come up with an American analogue you have to think of someone like Emerson, but nobody would ever dream of looking to him for movie ideas. Emerson was all brain, no pulp.

From the descriptions of him he seemed to channel Charles Bukowski.

For the nerdier Sci-Fi fans they have a piece on the revival of sorts of MST3K. Canceled in 1999, the creators have a new gig, called rifftrax, creating alternate alternate sound tracks for recent movies, instead of old B-grade sci-fi movies. Thanks to broadband you can now download their sound tracks as MP3 and play them along on your computer while watching the DVD. You have to get your girlfriend (if you have one by now) to do the robot puppets on the bottom of the screen. Sounds like a party to me!

Then Sherry and I caught an early show of Blades of Glory. If you think men getting hit in the crotch is funny (and sometimes it is) then this is the movie for you. Afterwards we had a late dinner at Andina. We stuck to the small plates menu (Cebiche, Chorizo, Causa filled with smoked trout.) Washed it down with a bottle of ‘01 Lorinon Reserva and glass of port for desert.
