Cat Tree

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Cat Tree After much debate we finally purchased a cat tree for Monty last weekend. It is quite possibly the ugliest piece of furniture I will ever buy but it should facilitate Monty’s love of looking out the window without him sitting on our furniture. It took him a while to show interest in it but once he realized it was not a carpeted cat trap he started napping in it. Now he can enjoy the mid-day sun perched on top of it with a view of the front yard, living room and kitchen.

No Country For Old Men

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

We caught an early show of the new Coen brother’s film last night. It was very good, definitely their best work in years. You could almost call it a Fargo set in West Texas, but this version is grimmer and much more of a thriller/chase movie than Fargo.

Afterwards we tried to get a table at Elemental. Just a warning to those readers trying to search out this restaurant: it has no street access or sign. Its on the ground floor of a new-ish condo building across from Gasworks park, up some steps on the eastside. There is really no other businesses around there open at night so if there is a light on that should be the place. (Or someone’s ground floor condo.) As with most new small hip restaurants they do not take reservations, but they also did not hire a host. We showed up at 7:30 and were greeted with an unfriendly sign saying: “Sorry but we are full and can not help you right now. Usually tables are available after 8:30.” With no place to wait for an hour we took about appetites to Pair instead where the friendly host quickly found a seat for us at the bar. Maybe we will try for Elemental again on a slower week night.

Mazama

022_19 Spent last weekend in Mazama doing some wedding planning. It is pretty quiet over there this time of year. On Friday after driving in we had a nice dinner at the Freestone Inn, where we overheard about them going condo. On Saturday we poked around a swap meet in the Winthrop Barn (where Sherry scored some Patagonia long-johns), met with the flower lady and the caterer, lunched at the Twisp River Pub, and had dinner at the caterer’s house. Sunday we ate wedding cake for breakfast and headed back home.

We took some more photos of the Ranch House and barn since we don’t have any pictures of it without it covered in snow. Sherry’s digital camera decided to die last weekend so we had to resurrect her old manual SLR camera with a trip to the hardware store in Winthrop for some batteries. Luckily the photo’s turned out nice.

Vote

Monday, November 5th, 2007

We sat down with the ballot and voter’s pamphlet tonight and did our best. As usual for a Seattle ballot, it was fairly entertaining. (Prison labor, drunk drivers, city charter preamble?) But School District Board candidate David Blomstrom has to win my award for favorite statement in the pamphlet.

I also advocate socialism – not Soviet-style, but more in line with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’ vision. The oil industry should be nationalized, and money spent on weapons used to murder civilians in Iraqistan would be better used to fund free medical care.
